PAN - Personal Area Network


Die Abkürzung PAN steht für Personal Area Network und bedeutet sinngemäß “persönliches Netzwerk“.

Was ist ein PAN?

Ein PAN ist ein sogenanntes Kleinstnetzwerk innerhalb einer Infrastruktur der Informationstechnologie (IT). Hier werden ein oder mehrere Geräte bzw. Benutzer in einem engen Umkreis per LAN (Local Area Network) oder WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) zusammengefasst. Der Sinn ist die Kopplung von EDV-Systemen untereinander oder auch der Anschluss externer Peripheriegeräte sowie Bedien- und Eingabemöglichkeiten (Uplink).

Personal Area Networks werden ad hoc aufgebaut und dementsprechend wieder abgebaut bzw. unterbrochen. Bestes Beispiel ist die Anwendung per USB (Universal Serial Bus).

Mittlerweile wird ein PAN eher drahtlos betrieben und somit WPAN genannt. Die Reichweite ist gewöhnlich auf wenige Meter begrenzt, außer bei den neueren Bluetooth-Standards (teilweise bis zu 100 Meter).

Wo wird PAN in der Regel angewandt?

Die typischsten PAN - Technologien sind Bluetooth (ein Standard für drahtlose Gerätekommunikation) und IrDA (Infrared Data Association – für z.B. Eingabegeräte wie Tastaturen, Mäuse oder Drucker). Im weitesten Sinne kann unter Umständen auch NFC (Near Field Communication) dazu gezählt werden.
